Talking about sex is never easy, for parents or teenagers. The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is teaming up with three of the nation’s largest health organizations to stop Big Tobacco from marketing to kids. Along with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Heart Association and American Lung Association, we are mobilizing hundreds of thousands of citizens in support of lifesaving legislation that would give the FDA the authority to regulate tobacco products.
From coast to coast, people are talking about the new era of change, but change cannot come soon enough for the young people in this country who are being targeted by greedy tobacco companies every day -- and girls are right in the middle of Big Tobacco’s crosshairs. While we have been waiting for Congress to act, tobacco companies have been sinking to new lows.
Your Members of Congress are home this week. Please CLICK HERE to send them a quick message telling them that you’re supporting the effort to give the FDA the authority to regulate the manufacture and marketing of tobacco products. Tell them that this bipartisan legislation is a win for everyone and that its passage should be a top priority in 2009. |

target girls and women.

Should teens be concerned about
health issues? YES!
Exercise and proper
nutrition are important at all ages. When you are young,
you have the opportunity to really make a difference in
your health as you age. |

Exercise ~ Who Needs
It? You Do!
NOT exercising
is actually a major risk factor for developing coronary
artery disease. It also increases your risk of stroke
and other major cardiovascular risk factors such as
obesity, high blood pressure, low HDL ("good")
cholesterol and diabetes.
The American
Heart Association recommends that children and adolescents
participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate to
vigorous physical activity every day. Try some of
these activities if possible:
Walk to and
from school instead of getting a ride
-
Limit activities
such as watching TV, playing video games, etc.
-
Get outside
more and play with your friends.
-
Take your
dog for a walk. Don't have a dog? Offer to walk
a friend's dog!
-
Set some fitness
and nutrition goals and take small steps to accomplish
them. It doesn't have to be done overnight. Think
of this as a journey to wellness!
You Can
Do It!

Did
you know that fatty deposits can begin to settle
in the arteries of your heart when you are young?
There
is compelling evidence that the fatty deposits of
plaque in artery walls begins in childhood and progresses
slowly into adulthood. Then it often leads to coronary
heart disease, the single largest cause of death
in the United States.
