February is American Heart Month

Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death among men and women in the United States.  But did you know that many of the factors triggering cardiovascular disease are PREVENTABLE?  Below are steps you can take to reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease and improve your quality of life.

How to maintain healthy weight: The calories you eat = the calories you burn (with activity).

How to engage in regular physical activity: 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (walking at brisk pace ~ 3.5 mph) most days of the week.

How to eat a healthy diet: Try adding one extra fruit and vegetable to your daily diet this month!

How to stablize your blood sugar levels: Eat low glycemic index foods: Citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit, lemons), beans, fat-free milk and yogurt, tomatoes, dark green leafy vegetables (spinach, collards, romaine lettuce)

How to manage your blood pressure: Taking medications to manage your blood pressure?  Make sure you are taking your prescriptions correctly. Talk with your physician about the proper time of day to take your medications.

How to control your cholesterol level: Regular physical activity is a FREE option proven to raise HDL cholesterol (The Good Cholesterol)
