IPV (polio)

Polio (poliomyelitis) is a contagious disease caused by a virus. It may not cause serious illness, but sometimes it can kill people who get it, usually by paralyzing the muscles that help in breathing. Polio used to be very common in the United States. It paralyzed and killed thousands of people a year before we had a vaccine for it. Polio is still common in some parts of the world.

Your child may be eligible for free vaccine. If you are not sure if your child is covered under the Vaccine for Children program, or you would like to make an appointment, call the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health at (641) 421-9321.
