Tetanus,
Diphtheria and Pertussis Vaccine (Tdap)
Tetanus,
Diphtheria and Pertussis are serious diseases. The Tetanus, Diphtheria
and Pertussis vaccine (Tdap) can protect adolescents and adults
from these three serious diseases. This vaccine is recommended
for anyone age 11 and older. This is now recommended instead of
the older tetanus booster shot.
- Diphtheria
causes a thick covering in the back of the throat and
can lead to breathing problems, paralysis, heart failure and
even death.
- Tetanus
(lockjaw) causes painful tightening of the muscles, usually
all over the body. It can lead to "locking" of the
jaw that cannot be opened nor can the person swallow. Tetanus
can lead to death.
- Pertussis
(whooping
cough) causes coughing spells so bad that it is hard for infants
to eat, drink or breathe. These can last for weeks. It can
lead to pneumonia, seizures, brain damage, and death.
Your child may be eligible for free vaccine. If you are not sure if your child is covered under the Vaccine for Children program, or you would like to make an appointment, call the Cerro Gordo County Department of Public Health at (641) 421-9321.
