Question: What's the difference between all of the types of flu I have been reading about in the news?

Answer: There are two main types of flu that we would like you to understand:

1). Seasonal influenza is what you hear about each winter. Seasonal influenza, which kills an estimated 36,000 people every year, is a respiratory illness that can be transmitted easily from person to person. Most people have some immunity. A vaccine is available each year.

2). Avian Flu (or bird flu) — is caused by influenza viruses that occur naturally among wild birds. The H5N1 variant is deadly to domestic fowl and can be transmitted from birds to humans. There is no human immunity. There is no vaccine.

A Pandemic is when a severe human flu causes a global outbreak (a pandemic) of serious illness. Because there is little natural immunity, the disease can spread easily from person to person. In the past, pandemics have been caused by bird flu. Currently, there is no pandemic flu. However, Public Health officials encourage all people to make emergency plans. National experts believe a pandemic is eminent. Learn more about pandemic and how you can protect yourself.

Question: What can I do now to protect myself from any type of influenza?

Answer: There are many ways you can protect yourself and your family members. One of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs is through proper handwashing.
