Healthy
Homes
Families
face many health risks in the place they feel the safest, their
home. But how does someone know what to look for in a home that
can be a potential health risk? Our Healthy Homes initiative is
here to help answer that question.
Parents
and other family members can learn about health risks that affect
us in our homes, such as:
- Radon
- Read about the dangers of
radon.
- Lead
Poisoning Prevention - The Cerro Gordo County Department
of Public Health is the coordinating county for the Empowerment
Lead Free Kids program. The following counties are included
in this program: Cerro Gordo, Hancock, and Worth.
- Water
Testing - Groundwater is a priceless resource. It is the
source of 82% of the drinking water in Iowa. Of this amount,
26% of Iowan households have their own well and water supply.
Overuse and pollution pose serious threats to our groundwater
supplies and endangers the health and economic growth in the
state.
- Private
Well-Water Testing in Cerro Gordo County - Within Cerro
Gordo County in 2005, 27.2% of the private wells tested have
been found to be contaminated with bacteria or nitrates. If
your well water quality is in doubt, contact our department
at 641-421-9336. Our environmental health specialists can
discuss the problem and recommend further action. Typically,
the first step would be to collect a water sample. Free water
sampling is available for residents of Cerro Gordo County
if our department collects the sample. At the same time, a
review of your well construction and advice on well maintenance
can be provided.
- New
Private Well Construction - Environmental health inspectors
design and inspect the construction of residential water supplies
within Cerro Gordo County. This serves to protect your drinking
water with appropriate construction and location of water
wells. A permit is required for all well work including new
well construction, rehabilitations and pump installations
performed within county limits.
