JEL C.I.A.
Guidelines

We’re asking youth groups in Cerro Gordo County to become "Communities in Action!”

You can have fun while earning money for your own
tobacco-free event! How? It’s simple.

Follow these guidelines.

You must be a member of the JEL CIA Register with your youth group leader (if you do not belong to a youth group but would like to participate, call us. We'll find a group for you!)

All members of JEL CIA must be in Middle School or High School and live in Cerro Gordo County.

All JEL CIAmembers are asked to become advocates for tobacco-free living in Cerro Gordo County. To be an advocate, you need to get out in your community and do something to promote tobacco- free living.

To earn money for your youth group, you must complete a public advocacy task and your findings must be presented to an approved authority (board/city council/ our coalition, etc).

For example, your group could:

1). Have your group eat at a local restaurant that is not totally smoke-free. When the meal is over, ask to speak to the manager about the restaurant’s smoking policy. Tell the manager you like this restaurant, but that you would like it more if it was totally smoke-free. Remember, be polite and make sure the manager has time to speak with you. If not, ask when you can meet with the manager to discuss the issue. Come prepared. Come with reliable facts about second- hand smoke. Use the American Cancer Society or the CDC as a resource, for example.

2). Collect cigarette butts in local city parks or around city buildings. Present your collection at a Park Board meeting or City Council meeting. Ask city officials to make the parks or buildings smoke-free. You could even collect signatures on a petition showing names of people who
support smoke-free environments. Present that to the board.

Those are just a couple of examples. Feel free to think of your own ideas.
Beginning August 1, you can look for more ideas at this web sit. (see our Teen Scene page).

  • Your activity must be YOUTH DRIVEN!
  • The more involved your activity, the more money you can earn!
  • When the money is gone, the money is gone. So hurry up and plan your advocacy project and get
it organized! This money is only available August 1, 2002 to June 30, 2003.

ONE FINAL REQUIREMENT: Plan and organize your project, then call us and tell us what you are doing before you begin. That way we all understand what is going to happen and when. This will avoid any disappointments later if your activity does not fit into the requirements of our grant. The amount of money your group earns will be determined by the Partnership for a Tobacco Free Cerro Gordo County. Money will be awarded after your project has been completed and you have presented your findings.

If you have any questions, please call and ask! We’re here to help get you started. Then, we want
you to take the ball and run with it! We can’t wait to hear what you’re planning!
